After more than three decades of pioneering research, innovation, and leadership in the field of audio science, Dr. Sean Olive, Senior Fellow at HARMAN, has announced his retirement. His 32-year journey with HARMAN has not only helped shape the company’s legacy of acoustic excellence but has also left an indelible mark on the global audio industry.

A Career Tuned to Discovery
Dr. Olive joined HARMAN with a passion for psychoacoustics and a vision to elevate the science of sound. Over the years, he became a driving force behind HARMAN’s most influential audio innovations. His work has consistently pushed the boundaries of how we understand and experience sound, earning him international recognition as a thought leader and innovator.

Among his early accomplishments, Dr. Olive's work on the seminal JAES paper in 1988 titled "The Modification of Timbre by Resonances" demonstrated how resonant peaks in a speaker or room's response can audibly color music, subsequently providing concrete targets for speaker design. Uncovering this correlation between objective acoustic measurements and subjective perception became the hallmark of his career.

The HARMAN Sound Curve: A Gift to the Industry
Perhaps Dr. Olive’s most transformative contribution is collaborating on the development of the HARMAN Sound Curve – a scientifically derived target frequency response that defines what most listeners perceive as the best-sounding headphone experience. This research, conducted over years of rigorous testing with diverse listener groups across cultures, ages, and experience levels, revealed that a headphone tuned to mimic the in-room response of a high-quality loudspeaker system is universally preferred. The discovery revealed that the ideal headphone should emulate the experience of listening to quality speakers in a room and set a new standard for neutral headphone sound.
The HARMAN Sound Curve has since become an industry standard. As a service to the audio industry, HARMAN made the research publicly available, and Dr. Olive’s findings helped ensure that listeners everywhere could benefit from scientifically optimized sound, as it raised the bar for audio quality across the industry.

A Legacy That Resonates
Dr. Olive’s work has not only advanced HARMAN’s product excellence – from JBL to AKG – but has also elevated the entire industry’s understanding of sound quality. His research into listener preferences, headphone equalization, and predictive modeling of sound quality has helped bridge the gap between subjective listening experiences and objective acoustic measurements.

His influence extends beyond the lab. As an educator, mentor, and advisor, Dr. Olive has inspired a new generation of audio engineers and researchers. His teachings at institutions like McGill, UCLA, and Harman University have helped shape the future of audio science. Through his blog,  Audio Musings, his talks at AES conventions, and his many published papers, he has demystified complex topics for engineers and enthusiasts alike. In his role as President of the Audio Engineering Society, he championed higher standards in audio evaluation and fostered collaboration between academia and industry.

His peers have recognized his contributions with numerous honors, including the AES Fellowship, two AES Publication Awards, and the ALMA Titanium Award for lifetime achievement in electroacoustics.

A Harmonious Farewell
As Dr. Sean Olive embarks on his well-earned retirement, we at HARMAN—and the broader audio community—celebrate a career that has truly changed the way the world listens. His legacy will continue to resonate in every HARMAN product and in every headphone that delivers sound the way it was meant to be heard.
