In-car displays and user experience are going to be the cornerstone in transforming the automotive industry. As in-car screens get larger and the number of screens grow, we have to address newer challenges such as power consumption and packaging these screens in the car. Thanks to the HARMAN-Samsung powerhouse, a new generation of display technology is arriving just in time to address these concerns. Leveraging Samsung’s industry leadership in display technology, HARMAN-Samsung are taking a two-pronged approach to automotive displays.

The new HARMAN QLED Auto solution will be the first of its kind to introduce automotive-grade Cadmium-free Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diode (QLED) technology, and HARMAN-Samsung will also bring advanced flexible and transparent Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) displays to the automotive industry. QLED Auto adds more choice and flexibility in the company’s leading display technology portfolio alongside its innovative OLED display technology.

Debuting at CES 2018, HARMAN’s QLED Auto is a collaboration with Samsung to extend the premium visual experience of Quantum Dot-based displays from the lifestyle and consumer segment to automotive applications, enabling high-gamut display performance for the automotive market at a competitive price. In a world where every surface inside the car could become a screen, consumers will expect the same kind of visual experience they get on their personal electronics when they buckle-up. Partnering with Samsung to enhance technologies typically found in other industries such as television and personal computing, HARMAN plans to deliver the same type of immersive user experiences consumers get in their homes and on the go into a vehicle’s cockpit.

With the adoption of electric vehicle technology, QLEDs with direct-lit back light technology allow for increased power savings which can lead to increased range and efficiency. The direct-lit back light and local dimming technology works in a similar manner to Samsung’s QLED televisions today and leverages the same algorithms and technical expertise capable of producing greater than 100 percent color volume. Beyond the benefit to drivers and passengers, OEMs finally have access to a cost-effective and scalable QLED solution for the next generation of automotive displays.

HARMAN is also partnering with Samsung, the world leader in OLED display manufacturing, to deliver additional flexible and transparent OLED technologies for automotive applications. At the HARMAN CES 2018 showcase, the next generation of flexible OLED technology will be demonstrated, including curved and free-form OLED displays. Together, HARMAN and Samsung will bring the flexible lighting offering into the automotive market.
