Keeping Drivers’ Eyes on the Road Made Easier with Industry’s First Pupil-Based Monitoring System by HARMAN

Safety on the road has become one of the most important qualities for automakers to consider as vehicles become more connected. At CES 2016, HARMAN introduced the industry’s first pupil-based monitoring system which was built to strike the perfect balance between maintaining a driver’s desire to stay connected while remaining alert and safe on the road. This eye and pupil tracking technology uses a camera to capture a driver’s pupil dilation while HARMAN’s proprietary software algorithm analyzes the pupil reflex in real time. This results in calculated outputs that intuitively adjust user interfaces, like placing mobile devices in do-not-disturb mode or signaling in ADAS system interventions to minimize physical and mental distractions to the driver. Amy Chu, director, project management, Corporate Technology Group, explains how this technology helps drivers lower their risks of distraction on the road.
